A Day in a Life: Art Director, Rob Cuthbertson

rob-CUTHBERTSON

River’s Art Director, Rob Cuthbertson, joined the team in June 2014 with a background in content marketing for international brands from the UK to Dubai. He talks about a day in his River life working on Honda’s Dream magazine.

My average day always starts with…
…a bike ride and a cup of tea, followed by a quick read of a few car blogs and emails.

My favourite thing about my job is…
…seeing new images and video come in! Goodwood Festival of Speed produced some amazing photos of both historic and modern competitive cars. I love stuff with wheels.

Today I am working on…
…creating new concepts for Honda’s main carousel and the latest Dream magazine email design.

It is an important part of the Dream project because…
…we’re creating an audience for Dream magazine.

What I aim to bring to the brand message is…
…engagement between people and Honda, to allow them to connect with and care about the brand.

The soundtrack to my working week should be…
…Turn on the Bright Lights by Interpol.

The best thing I have learned in my career so far is…
…save your work, know the problem, do one thing at a time, smile!

The person/brand I most admire in my field of work is…
Noma Bar, an illustrator who uses negative space to create imagery.

The person who would play me in a movie is…
…Bruce Willis.

The idea I wish I had come up with is…
…very geeky but, the camber on train wheels and the bevel on rails – they mean that trains can go round corners while having a fixed axle.

My favourite time of the day is…
…morning

When I was a kid I wanted to be…
…oddly, a graphic designer, my work experience at 15 was in an agency with a guy who used to ride in on a motorbike and watch TV while working! I’ve worked towards that but don’t think I’ll get the TV. I also wanted to be a truck driver – I still want to pass my test.

My best advice to anyone wanting to get into this industry is…
…be enthusiastic, know as many people face-to-face and learn everything about every detail of everyone’s jobs – soak it up!
