Commercial Director/Head of Department – Advertising

Core Functions

  • Delivery of advertising revenue to pre agreed targets across the River portfolio by leading and managing the teams and individuals within the advertising department
  • To have ownership of a client base of River’s biggest advertisers, personally responsible for selling to them and generating revenue; leading the way by example in terms of revenue generation
  • Be an expert in all areas of revenue generation and advertising types in print and digital media and client channels
  • Be up to date with new innovations in revenue generation and always be looking for new ideas 
  • Inspire, lead and manage the department 
  • Build and develop positive and effective close relationships with River clients (commercial contacts) at senior level
  • Report to the board and produce accurate weekly, monthly and quarterly departmental performance reports
  • Draft, present and effectively implement departmental strategy
  • Work with direct reports to forecast budgets and set stretching targets and gain approval from the River board
  • Lead new business pitches from an advertising revenue perspective (strategy and budgets)
  • Set departmental KPIs and ways of working
  • Identify training and development needs across the advertising department; to grow individual skillsets and build a strong team ethic
  • Lead by example and act as a team leader and man-manager 
  • Ensure admin processes and SAP are being accurately and continuously used

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Delivery of forecast revenue across River portfolio (from supplier, agency, trade and retailer-direct advertiser base)
  • Departmental strategy and ensure strategies for each client are robust
  • Develop excellent relationships with key River clients
  • Develop excellent relationships with key advertiser accounts
  • Keep the board informed regarding performance, opportunities, and threats at all times
  • Assist the teams to effectively develop, propose, cost, and implement creative solutions, sponsorship packages and advertorial ideas, including composites 
  • To work closely and pro-actively with editorial, production and publishing teams to ensure a consistent stream of new ideas and revenue opportunities are developed, agreed and taken to market, which are attractive to advertisers
  • To have a detailed and current knowledge of the client’s market and competitor activity, gained via reading within the trade press
  • Assist the teams to pro-actively find, share, and use magazine-specific, digital and industry research/stats to create meaningful arguments, presentations and sales messages; to be presented to your advertisers and designed to gained positive reactions
  • Manage the teams to over-achieve the agreed KPI’s 
  • Complete regular 1-2-1’s, and performance reviews, maintaining records of the outcomes and outputs, to ensure performance development is maintained and documented
  • Complete probation reviews and appraisals in a timely fashion, gaining input from the relevant colleagues and departments and sharing the documented outputs with HR
  • To attend supplier/advertiser meetings plus relevant events shows and conferences to promote relevant River accounts
  • To take an active role within the advertising department – generating team reports, insightful analysis and industry trend analysis to provide business development ideas for the business. Ensure the level of detail that is delivered is in-depth, honest and factual
  • Support the teams to sell creatively, to ensure that the best opportunities are presented to advertisers to gain a positive reaction, continual support and engagement. Working positively with the production, editorial and creative teams to produce relevant creative executions across advertorials and print and digital channels
